FFL Transfer Info

Buying a firearm online is simple, legal, and secure — when you know how the FFL transfer process works. Here’s everything you need to know to get your new firearm from Raincross Armory to your hands the right way.

What Is an FFL Transfer?

A Federal Firearms License (FFL) is a license issued by the ATF that authorizes a business to deal in firearms. Under federal law, a firearm purchased online cannot be shipped directly to your home — it must be shipped to a licensed FFL dealer near you. At the dealer, you’ll complete the required paperwork and background check before legally taking possession. This dealer-to-buyer step is called an FFL transfer, and it’s how every lawful online firearm purchase is completed.

Why it exists: The transfer process ensures every buyer passes a background check and meets all federal, state, and local eligibility requirements before receiving a firearm. It protects you, the dealer, and the community.

How the Process Works

  1. Place your order

Shop our selection and add the firearm you want to your cart, then check out as usual.

  2. Choose your FFL dealer

Select a licensed FFL dealer in your area to receive the firearm. Many local gun shops, sporting goods stores, and ranges offer transfer services. Don’t have one in mind? We’ll help you find a nearby dealer.

  3. We verify & ship

We confirm your chosen dealer’s FFL is valid and current, then ship your firearm directly to them.

  4. Complete the transfer

When your firearm arrives, the dealer contacts you to schedule a visit. You’ll fill out ATF Form 4473 and pass a background check (NICS).

  5. Take it home

Once approved, you legally take possession of your firearm. That’s it — you’re done.

What You’ll Need at the Dealer

  • A valid, government-issued photo ID (usually a state driver’s license) with your current address
  • To meet the minimum age requirement — 18+ for long guns, 21+ for handguns
  • To pass the NICS background check and meet all state/local requirements
  • Any additional documents your state requires (permits, safety certificates, etc., where applicable)

Transfer Fees

Heads up: Your receiving FFL dealer typically charges a transfer fee for handling the paperwork and background check. This fee is set by the dealer and paid directly to them — it is not included in your Raincross Armory order total. Fees commonly range from $20–$50 depending on the dealer and your state. We recommend confirming the fee with your dealer in advance.

Finding a Local FFL Dealer

Choosing a transfer dealer is easy. Look for a local gun store, indoor range, pawn shop, or sporting goods retailer that offers transfer services, and confirm they’ll accept a shipment on your behalf. If you’d like help locating a dealer or want us to coordinate with one you’ve already chosen, just reach out — we do this every day.

Know Before You Buy

Firearm laws vary by state, county, and city. It is the buyer’s responsibility to ensure the firearm you order is legal to own and transfer where you live. If a firearm cannot be legally shipped to your area or transferred to you, we will cancel that item and issue a full refund. When in doubt, check your local regulations or contact your chosen FFL dealer before ordering.

Frequently Asked

Can you ship a firearm to my house?

No. Federal law requires all firearms to ship to a licensed FFL dealer for transfer. There are no exceptions for online sales.

How long does the transfer take?

Once your firearm reaches the dealer, most transfers are completed in a single visit — often 15–30 minutes once your background check clears. Some checks are instant; others may take longer depending on the state.

What if my background check is delayed or denied?

Delays and appeals are handled between you, the dealer, and the FBI/NICS. If a transfer cannot be completed, contact us to discuss your options.
